There has always been a buzz around Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and while algorithms are constantly changing, certain fundamental principles remain the same.
At the risk of sounding over simplistic, I have put together a list of techniques that will definitely improve your search rankings without risking a Google penalty.
- Remove anything that slows down your site.
Have you ever sat waiting for a website to load? It sucks, and search engines don't rank slow-loading websites high for obvious reasons. It presents a bad user experience which is counter to the goals of search engine results. - Add relevant keyword(s) in Title Tag.
Your title tag remains an important on-page SEO technique. This may seem to be a common sense thing to do, but I still stumble upon websites with titles like "Homepage" or "Welcome". - Page copy
Content with more words is more preferable by the search algorithm compared to shorter, superficial articles. - Mobile friendly website.
Having a mobile friendly (or responsive) website gives a web visitor a good user experience and search engines recognize this in their ranking factor. - Historical page updates.
How often do you update your website? Daily, monthly, yearly? The frequency with which you update your web page counts. - Keyword in header tags (H1 - H6).
Having your keyword appear in header and subheaders gives context to pages and may contribute to higher search rankings. - Outbound link quality.
Be judicious in adding links to your website. Adding relevant quality outbound links to you website helps send trust signals to search engines. - Internal page linking.
Linking to other pages withing your website indicates its importance relative to other pages on the site, and helps with search engine optimization. - Backlinking.
Having backlinks from relevant quality websites is an SEO staple and helps your website to rank higher in search results. - SSL Certificate.
Secure your website. Google has confirmed that the use SSL Certificate (HTTPS) is a ranking signal.
